Super League 2016

Well, after 5 rounds, we already have 1 coach sacked from KR and now Brian Smith has resigned from Wakefield, for "personal reasons." God only knows what this means. Considering it's Wakey, it probably means the Chairman told him they're broke (again) and he'll have to work for nothing till the end of the season. Mick Potter spent half a season coaching Bradford as a volunteer, so it's not as stupid as it sounds.

Salford are being charged with salary cap breaches over the last 2-3 years which is a disaster. Marwan Koukash is the first new figure to come into Brit RL and pump some money into a club for eons. This would have been the first time since salary caps were invented that Salford spent even 75% of their full cap. Before Koukash, the only publicity the Reds ever got was when players sued them for unpaid wages.

Brian Smith...the loser's loser. This bloke could get teams to big games but never win them.

That's something Wakey will never need to worry about. The only thing in NRL you can compare them with would be early 2000s Bunnies or late 90s Wests Magpies.

The only reason Wakey are in SL is pure luck. They would have been relegated 4 years ago but Celtic Crusaders went broke and didn't apply to join SL the following year. When SL cut from 14 to 12, they were sure to get the boot but Bradford were docked 6 points for going broke and London were such a mess they hadn't even decided on a home ground until 3 weeks before Round 1 - and only had about 14 players signed 2 weeks before the comp started.

Widnes thumped Hull FC 48-6 today but the really interesting thing is their improvement. Last year they were a bottom 4, filler team. This year they top the ladder with 5/6 wins. The only thing that changed was 3 signings: Corey Thompson, Chris Houston and Charley Runciman. OK players but, seriously, how bad is the standard if those 3 can make such a difference?

I'd need to see what other changes they made off the field, but sometimes it only takes one new member to change the entire atmosphere within a group.

Like when Steve Price joined the Warriors and they went from being rubbish to being rubbish with Steve Price.

Widnes have the same ground and coaching staff as last year- including assistant coach Brett Hodgson.

Watched Catalans v Warrington and Les Cats are the NZ Warriors of SL - brilliant or rubbish, sometimes alternating every 5 minutes. With Kurt Gidley and Sandow, Warrington have now won 5/5. Sandow looks like a total genius at that level. Last night it was 24-20 to Wire with about 5 to go and Sandow scored a runaway try to wrap it up 30-20. Last week he won the game with a 79th minute field goal from 40m out.

The Mitchell Dodds broken leg was gruesome. He made a tackle and was on the ground when a support player hit his leg. He collapsed on the ground, another support player tried to hurdle him and clipped his leg. You could see his leg bend halfway up his shin.

Unusual for SL to have 2 games on TV tonight. I can't believe Iafeta Paleaaesina is still playing. They claim he's down to 104kg. The last couple of years his thighs would have been 104kg each.

Robins up 10-0 in 'umberside derby at HT.

Weird incident in the Castleford v Catalans game. Joel Monaghan scored for Castleford but there was a bobble from the high kick and he retook the ball in an offside position. The ref sent it upstairs as "Essai Refuse" (it was in France) The replay showed clearly that it was a No Try then the ref started arguing with the video ref who wanted to give it a TRY.

Monaghan went up for a high kick but lost the ball onto a teammate's head. Monaghan was in front of the "head" guy and regathered the ball - clearly offside, but I think the video ref just got the shits with the ref and gave it a TRY.
